Free target-size image tool

Compress an image to 500 KB or less

A 500 KB maximum is more forgiving for product and profile photos, but an original can still exceed it after conversion. This page preselects 500 KB and lets you keep the full image or match optional pixel limits. Verify the final format before uploading it to another site.

Where processing happens

JPG, PNG, and WebP stay in this browser by default. HEIC/HEIF files are uploaded to our server for conversion. No file is silently sent to the server if browser processing fails.

Browser-processed files stay on this device. Server-processed files are uploaded for this request; the tool does not create a stored download session.

Tip: Use “within bounds” when pixels may shrink further. Exact canvas and center crop preserve the specified dimensions even if the KB cap cannot be met.

Measured example

What happened to one test image at 500 KB?

This reproducible, textured illustration was 589.1 KB (603,220 bytes) at 1200 × 800 pixels. A measured JPG export with a 500 KB cap produced 330.9 KB (338,825 bytes) at 1200 × 800 pixels. It met the cap of 512,000 bytes.

The sample used the server encoder. The default browser encoder, other images, and other browsers can produce different sizes and quality. Check your own result in the tool.

Use the available space wisely

  • Start with the original rather than a previously compressed copy. Repeated JPG exports can add artifacts even when the file remains below 500 KB.
  • If the original is already a compliant JPG or WebP and no resize is requested, the tool can keep it unchanged. A file need not be close to 500 KB to pass a maximum-size rule.
  • For large batches, inspect each result before downloading the ZIP. Different photos can reach the same cap with different quality settings and pixel counts.

Where your images are processed

JPG, PNG, and WebP process in your browser by default. HEIC and HEIF go to our server for conversion, and you can choose server processing for other files. The tool accepts up to eight images, 10 MB each and 40 MB in total. It labels any above-cap output as best effort, so check the displayed bytes and pixels before submitting it elsewhere.

Questions about the 500 KB limit

Why is my result much smaller than 500 KB?

500 KB is a ceiling, not a requested exact file size. If the highest searched quality already fits, a smaller result is normal and still satisfies the size rule.

Does a 500 KB maximum guarantee sharp text or faces?

No. Check the visual output and dimensions yourself. A source with blur or heavy prior compression cannot recover missing detail through this tool.
